The training starts from the premise that e-learning requires to go beyond online teaching or video lectures and to carefully think about a learning journey. One can imagine it as a continuous cycle. In e-learning jargon, this is often referred to as the ADDIE process (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). While being only one of the approaches that can be used, ADDIE is the chosen methodology for this ToT as it lends itself very well to practical application in the context of human rights education.
Taking the cue from the 5 components of ADDIE, the ToT runs as a 5-week-long MOOC so that participants can experience first hand each phase of the process and the overall learning format. The training includes asynchronous activities, readings, discussions and hands-on exercises where participants work on their own proposed e-learning courses. There is also a 1-hour-long synchronous webinar in Mid-October with opportunities to ask questions to the course designers and engage in peer-to-peer discussions. The training is offered for free and run by the Global Campus E-Learning Department.
Course Outline
The MOOC runs over 5 weeks, each analysing one phase of the ADDIE process and the overall learning format. Each phase represents a set of questions that learners have to bear in mind once they start creating their course. Here below are some examples, among others:
- Week 1 explains the Analysis phase and tackles two important questions:
- Why is my course needed?
- Who may be interested in it?
- Week 2 is devoted to the Design phase and responds to 3 key questions:
- What are the foreseen learning objectives and outcomes? Do they change for online courses?
- What are the learning modalities of the course?
- Who is going to teach?
- Week 3 looks at the Development phase and asks:
- How to develop engaging content for online delivery?
- How to identify what is core and what is peripheral?
- How to align assessment tools with learning objectives?
- Week 4 presents the Implementation phase to make participants think about:
- What platform is best suited for this course?
- How to moderate the course?
- What should be done about quality assurance?
- Week 5 concludes by discussing the Evaluation phase and by asking:
- How to provide and collect feedback?
- Why care about feedback?
- What to do with lessons learned?

How do I enrol in the course?

This course is arranged as a MOOC, which means all components are open and totally free for participants.
Do I need to pay any fee to attend the course?
There are no registration or tuition fees. The certificate of participation is also free and offered to all those who successfully complete all the course requirements (see below for details on the certificate).
Is the course accessible to persons with disabilities?
We want all participants in our courses to enjoy a great learning experience and we strive to always improve accessibility. Each week of the course includes one or two video lectures with accompanying transcripts and reading materials. The texts are in PDF format, work at low bandwidths, are printable and can be zoomed to the desired size. Some readings may include pages from accessible websites. This makes all of them accessible to those who use assistive technology software such as screen readers. Likewise, weekly discussions and module quizzes can be completed through our platform which is accessible, for example, to people who use speech input, keyboard accessible controls or text to speech tools. Is there a schedule for the course or is it self-directed?
The course is self-paced and mostly asynchronous so participants can study in their own time. However, to enhance peer learning, interactive participation and self-assessment, weekly topics as well as module quizzes are proposed at set dates. In any case, they are all open until the end of the course to facilitate learning and completion at any preferred time. A webinar session is also arranged for live interaction with participants and is recorded and later uploaded on the platform to ensure access for those who are unable to attend.
